Cinemark US

Cinemark is an American movie theater chain that started operations in 1984 and since then it has operated theaters with hundreds of locations throughout the Americas and in Taiwan. It is headquartered in Plano, Texas, in the Dallas–Fort Worth area.

Worked as a contractor for Cinemark from May 2018 to October 2021 through Photon Infotech. Member of a team of 3 people that supported everything related to usability and visual design for the website, mobile apps (iOS & Android) and kiosks.

Day to Day

As being part part of a small team that serves other teams, all members are pretty much involved in every designed feature.

Prototyping, Wireframing, High Fidelity Mockups creation, Brainstorming Sessions, Presenting to Stakeholders, UX & UI reviews and Unmoderated Remote Usability Testing are among the activities and responsabilities I perform.

Most of times, the full team attends to meetings related to the development or enhancement of a feature, if not, the design manager communicates the requirements and one designer takes the lead to translate into designs.

    Highlights

    During the time served at Cinemark, I have been able to participate in the creation and enhancement of multiple features. Among the ones that I feel proud to mention, are the following:

    Mobile App Redesign

    By the time I arrived to Cinemark, the mobile app redesign project was already in the works, the visual design was being defined and the transition was set to be in phases, page by page. I was directly involved in every page redesign, some more than others but all the members contributed at some degree.

    Online Concessions Ordering

    Until 2019, the Cinemark website didn't offer online concessions ordering, but the request for supporting it came in and I had the opportunity to work in the early explorations and designs for this feature, of course, always with the support of entire UX team.

    It was important to consider that the initial food & drink menu was reduced and it was important to have in mind designing it to scale as needed.

    Confirmation Page Redesign

    Redesigning this page was a very important effort, as this is a key step for users after a purchase. The main issue with the previous version, was that the information presented was hard to read and split for users. There was a mix of items purchased vs transactional information which created frustration at the moment of scanning this page.

    The solution was to break this page into two, the confirmation would only contain details related to the products recently bought, with high level transactional information but having the option to navigate to a second page with further details of the latter.

    Design System

    We focused on developing a basic design system that was aligned with the corporate brand and helped us be consistent across our designs and also at the time of handing of to development. We documented design principles and created a comprehensive guide for future reference, ensuring that everyone was on the same page. Looking back, I take pride in contributing to a system that not only enhanced efficiency in our design process but also contributed to a polished and harmonized user experience.

    Conclusions

    Working at Cinemark gave me the opportunity to work in a environment where the suggestions provided by the UX team were heard and valued by the organization.

    I had the chance to learn from experienced designers and leaders, which guided and pushed me out of my confort zone making it possible to improve my skills.
